Send and receive faxes for free, from your office computer
Most department offices on the Nevada campus are equipped with fax machines, but what if you're using your laptop somewhere other than your office, or working from home, and need to send or receive a fax? As it turns out, there are some pretty good options available to anyone with Web access. Best of all, they're free.
Fax4Free is a service that offers both free and for-fee fax solutions. With eFax Free, you sign up and get a phone number that others can use to send you faxes; instead of getting the faxed documents as printouts from a fax machine, they show up as attachments to email messages. There's a catch (or two), of course: Your number will not be a local one, and you'll want to make sure you read the terms of use carefully.
TPC Fax lets you send faxes for free, using their online form. In this case the catches are that the service does not offer universal coverage (you can check coverage of a number before you send the fax), and you'll have to cut and paste your document into an online form.
If you'd like to send a Web page to someone's fax machine, you can use the MacLaunch site which, its name notwithstanding, works fine for both Macs and PCs. Its coverage is limited to fax numbers in the U.S., Canada and Australia, but there don't seem to be any catches beyond that.

Need specialized software? Want to access it from your office or home? We can help...
DataWorks Citrix Metaframe Cluster:
Invoke Data Analysis & Visualization Software from Home or Office.
Do you find yourself occasionally in need of Mathematica, Chem3D, ArcView, IDL, ChemAbstracts, or Compustat while using your office or home PC? The Library's DataWorks department supports remote connections to these and an array of other software resources via our Citrix MetaFrame server farm.
Other than your PC and a project requiring software hosted by DataWorks, all you'll need to run applications on the Citrix servers are a UNR NetID and an installed Citrix client for your web browser. Both are easily acquired.
If you haven't done so already, you can establish your NetID in any library on campus, or do it yourself from the NetID webpage.
To install the Citrix client, go to http://hercules.library.unr.edu. If Citrix is not installed on your PC a triangular yellow icon will display in the lower right corner of your screen, along with instructions for installing the client. All you need do is click on the "Citrix ICA Web Client for (your PC type)" link and installation is automatic. Then restart your browser and you're ready to roll.
A list of software products available to UNR researchers via Citrix is provided on http://www2.library.unr.edu/dataworks/software.html . If you have suggestions for additional products to add to this array, contact Duncan Aldrich (duncan@unr.edu) to make your
recommendation. More information on the Citrix server product can be found at the Citrix homepage.
